Russian Imports Dominate NorAm Duathlons

Quebec's Dasha Gaiazova and Russian Ivan Babikov came out on top today in the Haywood NorAm Canada Cup duathlon events.

Dasha Gaiazova of Montreal skied away from the field early on in the women's 10km duathlon and cruised in for the win in a time of 30 minutes 38.5 seconds. National team skier Chandra Crawford outsprinted team mate Milaine Theriault for second place 25.2 seconds behind Gaiazova. Jacqui Benson and Gabriel Nadeau rounded out the top 5.

The men's 15km duathlon saw the field stay together until the final few kilometers of the skate leg, when Russian Ivan Babikov skied away from Canada's strongest skiers. Babikov finished in a time of 39 minutes and 14.8 seconds, 18.6 seconds ahead of a hard charging George Grey. Drew Goldsack outsprinted Devon Kershaw for third place 2.1 seconds later. Adam Kates finished 5th.

“I think this was a great start to the season, and a real indicator of what work needs to be done,” said Dave Wood, head coach, Canadian Senior Cross-Country Ski Team, who will be heading to Norway this week to join Canada’s elite athletes, Beckie Scott and Sara Renner, who are competing in their opening World Cup event of the season, December 6-7, 2003. “We witnessed some strong performances this week by our young skiers, and that is a sign things are going well. We are looking forward to the rest of the season.”

The next competition on the calendar for the Haywood NorAm Canada Cup is slated for Calgary, December 13-14, 2003, at Canada Olympic Park.
