Grey and Scott Win Canadian NorAm Opener

The Canadian NorAm racing series kicked off today with the men's 15km classic and women's 10km classic races at Sovereign Lakes Ski Club in British Columbia. Racers were greeted with ideal early season conditions and well prepared tracks.

The men's race was won by National Team skier George Grey in a time of 39 minutes and 12.5 seconds. Grey pulled away in the closing kilometers to win by 8.6 seconds over's Russian import Ivan Babikov. Canadian team's Chris Jeffries finished in third position, one minute and 4.9 seconds back. The top five was rounded out by Devon Kershaw in fourth place and Gordon Jewett in fifth position.

The women's race was not surprisingly dominated by Canada's two strongest women, Beckie Scott and Sara Renner, who were racing in Canada before departing tomorrow to contest the World Cup races in Italy and central Europe. Scott won the 10km classic in a time of 31 minutes and 56.8 seconds, just 24.5 seconds ahead of hard charging team mate Sara Renner. Quebec's Dasha Gaiazova finished third at two minutes and 23.1 seconds behind. 2002 Olympian Milaine Theriault, who is returning to racing after a year hiatus to have a baby, finished in 4th position followed by Chandra Crawford in 5th.
