Another Gold for McKeever at World Disabled Ski Championships

Baiersbronn, Germany

Brian McKeever added a second gold to his collection this morning after winning the men’s cross-country ski short distance race at the World Disabled Ski Championships held in Baiersbronn, Germany.

In today’s 5 km event, the 23-year old Paralympic two-time gold medallist dominated his field once more to finish in 13:29.1.  Led by his guide and older brother Robin McKeever, Brian skied over 30 seconds faster than the second place German Frank Hofle.  Hofle, who has participated in 6 Winter Paralympic Games and medalled three times a last year’s Salt Lake City Paralympics, could not contend with the young Calgary native today.  The bronze medal went to Russia’s Nikolai llioutchenko, also a medallist from Salt Lake City, who posted a 14:15.6 final time.

In the women’s cross-country sit-ski 2.5 km event, Hinton’s Shauna Maria Whyte, who yesterday took a silver medal in the biathlon event, was pushed just out of the medals finishing fourth in 10:02.4.

“I’m quite happy with today’s race,” says Whyte.  “It is a tough race, because it’s a total sprint, but compared to last year in Salt Lake City, I am really happy with how things are progressing this year.”

Candace Cable from the USA grabbed the gold medal in a speedy 9:25.6.  Cable, who at last year’s Paralympic Games placed 8th in the same event, was in fine form this morning.  The silver medal went to Ukraine’s 19-year old Olena Yurkovska in 9:50.7 and the bronze went to Russia’s Irina Poliakova in 9:54.3.

McKeever and Whyte were the only Canadians who started today.  The World Disabled Ski Championships will continue on Tuesday with the Biathlon short distance events.
