Smigun and Sommerfeldt win in Kavgolovo

Estonian star Kristina Smigun started quickly to win the womenís 5k skate World Cup in Kavgolovo today, overcoming frigid temperatures reported to be as low as -20C. Smigun was followed by a strong Italian showing from Valbusa and Paruzzi. One of the pre race favorites, Evi Sachenbacher, finished 4th, followed by 5 Russians from 4th to 9th.

Skari, Pedersen, Moen, Bjoergen, Beckie Scott and all the Finish women did not ski. The Norwegians have chosen to focus on training while Finland has national championships. Skari still holds a slight 18 point lead in the overall World Cup over Smigun.

In the men's race, Germany continued its strong performances with Rene Sommerfeldt winning the menís 10k skate. Mathias Fredriksson continued his consistant season and finished 2nd. Fredriksson has often battled sickness in parts of the season but has been very strong so far this year. Axel Teichmann, traditionally best in classic and the winner of the Ramsau pursuit in late December, finished 3rd.

Pietro Piller Cottrer finished 4th and Tobias Angerer was 5th. Vittoz, a pre event favorite, placed 7th and Elofsson 9th.

With his win, Sommerfeldt takes over the lead in the overall world cup ahead of Fredriksson.
