Cross Country Canada Director of Marketing and Events Management

Cross Country Canada (CCC) is the National Sport Governing Body for the sport of cross-country skiing in Canada. Building on the unprecedented success of its skiers at the Salt Lake City Olympics/Paralympics, CCC has produced a comprehensive and ambitious Strategic Plan to lead to the achievement of more podium results in 2006 and 2010. The corporate strategy within this Plan emphasizes the critical importance of developing an expanded and dependable resource base for the Association’s operations. This will be achieved, in large part, through an enhanced focus on marketing and promoting the CCC brand.

Working directly for the Executive Director, the Director of Marketing and Events management will provide leadership, professional management and technical expertise to the functions of marketing, sponsorship, fundraising and events management. In general terms, the focus of this position will be on increasing revenue and raising profile.


Working with the Marketing Committee, the Director of Marketing and Events Management will assist in creating an entrepreneurial attitude within CCC and in developing and executing an aggressive campaign to enhance, promote and market the CCC brand, both externally and internally. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the Suppliers’ Pool, worth over $300K
  • Supporting and servicing corporate sponsors
  • Assisting with new corporate sponsorship initiatives
  • Coordinating athlete promotional activities
  • Facilitating self-funding projects in cooperation with Divisions and Clubs
  • Working with the Events Committee, this individual will assist in developing the full potential of the National Cross-Country Ski Championships and the Continental Cup series as events of international stature which showcase the sport, attract increased media and public attention and provide essential competitive experience for Canada’s best skiers. Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing event hosting criteria
  • Establishing and updating the national level events calendar
  • Liaising with and providing technical advice to event organizers with respect to marketing, promotion and financial management
  • Promoting CCC’s image at national level events
  • Developing productive partnerships with major loppet organizers
  • Coordinating the support provided by Technical Delegates to event organizers
  • Skills and Qualifications

    Most importantly, the successful candidate will possess enthusiasm for high performance sport and a strong commitment to excellence as the required result of the CCC team effort. Essential attributes include:

  • Personal experience in high performance sport as an athlete and/or coach
  • As a minimum, a working knowledge of competitive cross-country skiing
  • As a minimum, an undergraduate degree in sports marketing or administration
  • Practical experience in sports promotion and branding
  • Functionality in both official languages (desirable)
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills
  • Proven ability to innovate, exercise initiative and build effective networks
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Employment Details

    The position will initially be established as an eight-month contract, commencing 1 September 2002. Conversion to indeterminate status will depend on results achieved. It is preferred that the Director work at the CCC Head Office in Canmore, Alberta, but scope exists for work to be conducted from home at any major centre in Canada. Considerable travel will be necessary. Salary for the contract period to be $25K plus bonus clauses.
