|European Whining to get U23 Championships Moved|
Although not yet listed on the FIS calendar, the inaugural World Under 23 Championships, scheduled for early February in Soldier Hollow, have reportedly been moved to Bormio, Italy. The races will apparently also move dates, running from the 13th to the 16th of February. The race schedule appears to be set to include a pursuit (the new name for ski-duathlon), a mass start 15k/30k classic and a skate sprint.
The decision to move the races will certainly prove to be a controversial one, given the drastic change in venue and the loss of the rare opportunity for North American skiers to race at home. It is rumoured that the change was made after several Scandinavian countries complained that travelling across the Atlantic ocean was too stressful for their athletes. Several nations threatened not to attend that championships.
The original dates planned for the U23 races would have conflicted with World Junior Championships, so that change is not surprising. The U23 races will be sandwiched between the World Junior Championships (Feb.2-9, Solleftea, Sweden) and the World Championships (Feb.18-Mar.1, Val di Fiemme, Italy), which should potentially allow both juniors and seniors to attend.
