No Surprises in Sprint Relay

It was hardly a surprise to see the American duo of Andrew Johnson and Kris Freeman easily win the skate sprint relay on Thursday at US spring series. Both skiers have shown huge improvements in the last year that led to impressive Olympic results, and their good form has continued into the spring. Freeman and Johnson won by 21.5 seconds over the top Canadian team of George Grey and Chris Jeffries with Dave Stewart and David Chamberlain a further 8.5 seconds back. The sprint relay featured two man teams, with each skier racing the 1km loop five times, alternating with his teammate.

The women's event was won by the team of Reithofer and Ekatrina Ivanova, who narrowly defeated the American team of Melissa Oram and Aubrey Smith by 5.6 seconds. Aelin Peterson and Natalie Cartwright teamed up to finish third, at 16.3 seconds back.

The junior men's event was won by American's Ryan Foster and sprint sensation Andrew Newell, who finished just 0.5 seconds ahead of Vaclav Svub and Jan Vykoukal from the Czech republic after a late race charge by Newell moved them in front. Canadian Devon Kershaw teamed with American Leif Zimmerman to finish third 11.3 seconds from the lead.

The junior women's event was won by Molly Gray and Morgan Smyth. They finished 11.6 seconds ahead of the second place team made up of Gorasnsson and Lena Jansson. Spechtenhauser and Sara Jorg finished third at 22.3 seconds back.
