Canadian World Junior Team Announced

Devon Kershaw continued his dominant performance for the week at the World Junior trials in Charlo, NB winning by over 30 seconds in todays 20km classic race.

Colleen Mortimer had a strong race to win the women's 15km classic by 13 seconds over Dasha Gaiasov.

After the exciting week of trial races a team of young skiers has been selected to represent Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Schonach, Germany.

The women's team is made up of: Madeleine Williams from Edmonton, AB, Chandra Crawford from Canmore, AB, Colleen Mortimer from Ottawa, ON, Emily Hayman from Sault Ste Marie ON, and Shayla Swanson from Calgary, AB.

The Canadian junior men's team is made up of Devon Kershaw from Sudbury, ON, Sean Crooks from Thunder Bay, ON, Connal Robertson More from Calgary, AB, and David Nighbor from North Bay, ON.

The athletes leave for Europe on Thursday, January 10. The races at the 2002 World Junior Championships are running January 22 - 27. Support staff include Dave Battison of Canmore, AB, Gaetan Marchand of Rimouski, QC, and Gerard Frostad of Whitehorse, YT. The trip is led by the junior team head coach, Alain Parent.

  The selection races also serve to select a group of developing athletes for a Junior "B Tour". Athletes will compete in Subaru Canada Cup races in Canmore, AB on Jan 12/13 and Subaru Continental Cup races on Jan 19/20 in Silver Star, BC. The Canadian Olympic Team Athletes will also attend these races and the Men's Swedish Olympic Team is rumored to be racing as well.
