|Swenson and Kempple Win US Titles|
Carl Swenson captured the 2002 US National 30km skate title today, on a difficult course in Bozeman, Montana. Swenson's time of 1:20:28.1 beat out Gold Cup champion Justin Wadsworth by 36 seconds. US National Sprint Champion Lars Flora added another medal to his collection, finishing third. Andrew Johnson and Nathan Schultz rounded out the top five.
Several Canadians raced, although the results were poor. Donald Farley had a strong race, but suffered from very poor skis to finish in 17th place. Robin McKeever joined Marcus Nash on the DNF list, and Glen Bond finished 70th, over 14 minutes off the lead.
In the women's 15km skate race, Nina kemppel made good on her favorite status to win her first National Title for the year. Her time of 44:47.0 beat second place finisher Katerina Hanusova by 14.6 seconds. Wendy Wagner continued her strong season to finish third, followed by US National Sprint Champion Kikkan Randall in fourth and Melissa Oram in fifth.
The Canadian contingent was led by Shannon Dikkema skiing for NMU in 46th. Sara Peters of Ottawa was 48th.
