Elofsson, Lazutina Take World Cup Sprint

Sweden's Per Elofsson was leading by 18 seconds after the 10k classic in the men's pursuit in Val di Fiemme today, and never looked back. The pursuit World Champion from 2001 won by more than 30 seconds.

The skiers behind Elofsson, lead by Alsgaard and Veerpalu on the first 5k, never tried to catch Elofsson.

On the last lap at least 10 skiers were jockeying for the second spot, Mathias Fredriksson did look strong but Alsgaard and Aukland managed to join Elofsson on the podium. Veerpalu and Mae followed next. Only 10 seconds separated the top 9 after Elofsson.

Per Elofsson now leads the overall world cup with by 242 points over Aukland. This was Elofsson's 10th world cup victory, Gunde Svan has 30 and Mogren 13.

In the women's pursuit, the Russians Danilova and Lazutina wasted no time in catching up with Bente Skari (leader after classic) in the skate part of the women's cross-country pursuit in Val di Fiemme on Saturday.

Lazutina, the Olympic champion in the pursuit from 1998, was very strong and won easily.

Danilova was second. Skari managed 3rd and took over the world cup lead from Neumanova who was 4th. Neumanova won this event in the Pre Olympics event in 2001.

Tschepalova was 5th and Pedersen 6th, next were Savjalova, Belmondo and Egorova.

This was Lazutina's 22nd world cup win and her first this season.
