NordicX Set for Calgary Olympic Park

Calgary, AB: Organizers of the 2005 NewUnion event have confirmed dates and the venue for this unique crossover event which will take place April 2, 2005 at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. NewUnion combines a ski, snowboard, downhill mountain bike, cross country skiercross, and live outdoor concert into an action packed day of sport, music, and excitement.

Modeled after similar events such as the X-Games in the U.S and Freestyle.ch in Switzerland this event marks the first time such a snow sport event has been held in Canada. A portion of the proceeds from the event directly supports the athletes and programs of the National Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Training Centre.

NewUnion will take place at Canada Olympic Park, the site of the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta. “Canada Olympic Park is the perfect venue for NewUnion with great spring snow conditions, easy spectator access, and the skilled staff that can pull off an event like this” explained NewUnion Operations Manager, Colin Bell. A portion of the proceeds from the event directly supports the athletes and programs of the National Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Training Centre.
NewUnion is produced by NewUnion Ltd. a Calgary based event and entertainment marketing company which will present a full day of sports action with 3 signature events:

Battle Royal is the first ski vs. snowboard air and style competition that puts the spotlight on the evolution of freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Randomly drawn ski and board athletes will compete head to head to impress a panel of judges in an attempt to settle the ski vs. snowboard battle once and for all. Over $15,000.00 in cash and merchandise are on the line in this event.

Spring Fling BikerX pits 4 mountain bike athletes against a slippery slope of mud, ice and slush as the riders compete to cross the finish line. This elimination format event will see riders pushing the limits of rider and machine to claim the BikerX title. Over $7500.00 in cash and merchandise will be awarded to the winners of this all open event.

NordicX is the revolution of cross country skiing as the sport blasts it’s former image of a serious, no fun sport. With a high speed course full of jumps, berms, and high speed corners this event will test the ability of Nordic athletes to push the limits of what is possible on a pair of cross country skis. 4 athletes will be on course at once with 2 moving on to the next round each race. $10,000.00 in cash will be up for grabs in the Senior Open categories with the Junior Open categories vying for $8000.00 in merchandise.

The finals for all events will take place between 5-7 PM to ensure spectators can witness all the action.

Concert: NewUnion will also showcase the best of Canadian music on the outdoor concert stage.

Day: Action will include some of Calgary’s hottest up and coming bands playing a free concert for fans on the mainstage.

Night: Major label Canadian band rocks the mainstage for this ticketed event. Up to 5000 fans will be treated to a spectacular outdoor concert live from the COP stage.

The 2005 NewUnion event takes place on April 2 at Canada Olympic Park. This cross disciplinary event showcases the best ski, snowboard, mountain bike, and cross country ski athletes in conjunction with live music concert and a snowsports expo. New Union offers an event that has been lacking in the Calgary area, so save the date!
