Carleton, Kabush take XTrail

Erik Carleton and Danelle Kabush won the 10k (12km?) XTrail running race at the Canmore Nordic Centre on Saturday in commanding style. Despite taking several of the courses longer "optional routes" than his competitors, Carleton easily won the men's event in a time of 48 minutes and 7.5 seconds. Carleton was one minute and 24.6 seconds ahead of second place runner Gordon Jewett who just held off National Team team mate Casey Dyck by 7.8 seconds.

Danelle Kabush, a high level mountain biker and sports psychology Phd student that works with the National Ski Team, won the women's event in a time of 55 minutes 48.3 seconds, 2 minutes and 25 seconds ahead of Sara Renner. Renner's team mate, Becky Laakso, rounded out the top three.

The 5km (6km?) events were won by Jared Strand and Rhonda Sandua.

The XTrail course included two "choices" each of the two laps, as runners could take a more challenging route that also took much longer, or an easier shorter route. Needless to say the longer more challenging route was not very popular among the top runners, although Erik Carleton did give himself a 20-30 second penalty each lap by running a slightly longer route.
